Moin Khan- the name in itself evokes a feel of stardom and rightly so as the celebrity hairstylist and make- up artist’s hob knobs with the superstars of this part of the world, enhancing their beauty with his magical touch. Drawing people like bees to nectar is ‘Moins’ which is synonymous with style and éclat that is set apart from the rest.
Were you always interested in this field?
For as long as I can remember I was fascinated by this trade.
Where did you begin your journey?
At Salon KESS
For Moin, a journey which began with a single step has earned him a formidable reputation and it has to do with his passion for his trade and the personalized care given to each and every client.
How did you get into the big leagues, specifically the South India film industry and Bollywood?
Call it a stroke of luck or a brush with destiny as one of my client’s – a film Director approached me with the idea while I was working in Sri Lanka and I eagerly accepted due to the novelty.
Describe your experience
Ecstatic! The endless soirees, films and entertainment which required being on my feet with continuous and up-to-date knowledge of the trends and ensuring that each client was styled to perfection. It also paved the way to work for Deepika Padukone on the set of Om Shanthi Om and other productions.
What caused you to return to Sri Lanka?
It was a hiatus from the monotony and the need to spend more time with my family. It was also a deep desire to be an all-rounder in the trade.
What awaited you in SL upon your return from India?
I joined Chagall as a Senior Stylist and worked for a period of three years prior to gaining a broader knowledge of the business aspect through my work for MOSH. I was also the brand ambassador for their product Alpha Puff Milano.
What spurred you to establish your own Salon?
A profound understanding of the business and the moment of realization which hit me, that the time was ripe for me to spread my wings –the timing was right for MOINS!
What prompted you to choose the name MOINS?
It was purely coincidental as I was searching for a name which did not feature my name in it but a client received a call, and when inquired about her whereabouts she responded… “I’m at MOINS’ and that struck a chord. It was that same client who was the Chief Guest at the opening of MOINS in 2017.
How does being an entrepreneur differ from being an employee?
The challenges are endless, with the need to ensure the clients and staff are content while maintaining the standards and reaching for newer goals which is solely upto me but it is worth it, as it garners an immense sense of satisfaction and the freedom to explore one’s potential in every area of this trade.
Do you have plans to expand?
There was an intention to move to greater Colombo but my clients prefer the current location with its security, ample parking and convenience. As well, I prefer to maintain one salon for the sole purpose of giving my clients a personalized service. Throughout the years, my clients have become my friends and confidantes and I prefer to maintain that rapport and offer them the best of my creative capabilities to enhance their appearance and boost their confidence, as that gives me immense pleasure and incomparable satisfaction, after all, it is my clients’ happiness that matters to me the most.
What type of services are offered at MOINS?
It is a unisex salon, offering all aspects of aesthetic care from facials to manicures, pedicures and more with our expertise in hair and make- up being a popular attraction to clients who come from far off places in the island and the world.
We are also extremely flexible and adhere to our client’s unique requirements and preferences. I am also very particular about the products we use and personally vouch for the standards maintained.
What do you feel is imperative for success in this trade?
A vital prerequisite to growing and succeeding in this sphere is the ability to listen to a client and the willingness to accept constructive criticism. Building rapports that last is also pivotal while doing your best to satisfy a client ensures long term success and a loyal and ever-growing clientele. Always strive to maintain the trust the client places on you and be confident enough to communicate openly.
With 15 years of experience in the industry, internationally recognized certifications and exposure to overseas platforms such as India, Malaysia, Vietnam, Maldives and more, it comes as no surprise that Moin’s fame has spread far and wide, making him one of the most celebrated beauticians in the world…
